Zante is world famous for a couple of reasons, but one of them is the nesting Loggerhead turtles or Caretta Caretta as they are known locally. Tourists flock from all over the world to swim alongside them in the crystal clear waters of the ionian.
On the beaches of Laganas & Kalamaki in particular you’ll find there are no water sports allowed, these resorts are 2 of the most popular on the island so it feels a little strange until you realise why. However, the locals in Zakynthos found a way that would not only give you one of the best days of your holiday, but also get you up close and personal with the famous sea creatures, speedboats.
You can hire a private speedboat in most of the resorts around the island, whether you’re in Tsilivi on the east, Porto Vromi in the North West or down south in Laganas and
they are exactly as advertised. The boats hold up to 9 people, and are normally rented for between 4 and 6 hours at a time. As long as someone in the group has at least a provisional driving licence you’re good to go. And even if they don’t, you can pay an extra €40 and a skipper will be provided.
To hire a speedboat in Zante is such an awesome way to see the island, if you’re in the South you can head over to Marathonisi (Turtle Island), go cliff jumping, snorkelling and even find hidden caves in Keri. But for sure, finding the resident turtles and jumping in for a swim with them is a dream come true. If you’re further North you can explore the blue caves and even head to Navagio Bay to see the shipwreck.
The best bit about Zante’s number 1 activity is the price. You would expect a private speedboat for the day to be very expensive, however, it can be as little as €20 per person including rental, fuel and everything else you need. If you’re in Laganas, you can even rent cool boxes with

We would recommend booking your date and time slot as early as possible to hire a speedboat in Zante, the boats get booked up very quickly, especially in June/July/August. You can choose from morning or afternoon for most of them and plan ahead so it doesn’t clash with any events you may have booked already. You can also reserve your speedboat with a small deposit payment and pay the rest on arrival.
You’ll probably look back on your speedboat day as the best of your holiday, it really is an amazing opportunity to make some fantastic memories and we can’t recommend it highly enough.
